Biography
Joel joined Ernst & Young LLP in September 2018 as a managing director in the Private Client Services (PCS) FSO practice. Joel previously spent his entire 13-year professional career at another Big Four public accounting firm within its Personal Financial Services practice providing income tax compliance, consulting and planning services almost exclusively to individuals working in the financial services/asset management sector. At his previous firm, Joel dedicated his time to working with some of the world’s most successful hedge and private equity fund managers as well as their family offices to provide proactive, thoughtful and complex planning strategies. Joel has worked with clients on aircraft acquisitions; professional sports team transactions; and various trust and estate planning matters, including grantor retained annuity trust (GRAT) planning, vertical slice planning, charitable trust planning and family office planning/profits interest structures.
Joel maintained a lead PCS role on EY US’ COVID-19 tax task force, especially in driving thought leadership and webcasts surrounding the CARES Act and time-sensitive planning opportunities. The focus then turned to the 2020 election and timely planning.
Joel has been frequently invited by various law firms and investment banking firms to speak on such topics as tax reform, charitable giving and major tax issues facing fund managers.
Joel graduated from Binghamton University cum laude in 2005, receiving a BS in Accounting, and then received a JD from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University in 2011. Joel is both an Enrolled Agent with the IRS and admitted to practice law in the state of New York.
